Seemingly in honor of today's date, there are not one but two declarations that curly hair is something other than an imperfection to be dealt with ASAP. Simon Doonan's talking about the Afro, and Molly Young a hairstyle called "curly bangs," but if the racial-political implications are different, the hairstyle itself is the same: tight curls, some of which drape over the forehead. Because wouldn't it be hilarious if curly hair - and not straight hair given a few mermaid waves - were socially-acceptable or even mainstream-attractive?
