The Forefront of Medicine...

Those of you who don't reguarly visit the Univ. of Chicago campus should know that its slogan is "At the forefront of medicine." You should also know that there's a man who regularly protests in front of the hospital with a sandwich board, complaining about the practice of circumcision at the hospital with a slogan involving some play on the words foreskin and forefront.

Without any prejudice for the man's position on the issue, readers should nevertheless take care not to give that man any mention of the article Dan Drezner pointed his readers to yesterday. I must say that as a former microbiologist, I'm somewhat apalled.

Yeah, Nick, that's horrible. I've never heard of that practice--sure this is for real?

When he's not comparing circumcision to a crime against humanity, the anti-circumcision guy's actually fairly normal (I've seen him at the Metra stop).

But as a former employee of the Committee on Microbiology, I, too, am appalled. I realize that cauterization can risk damage, but couldn't large doses of clotting factor applied to the area stop the bleeding?
